Time Shifted Viewing:
Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Same-day vs. DVR rankings: Bubble shows are still bubble shows, hits are still hits

$

With the broadcast network upfronts just a few weeks away, a lot of talk about just what a show’s ratings — be they same-day, Live +3, Live +7 or Live + forever — mean and just whether a delayed audience is that big a help to a show on the bubble.

Gathering more audience is never a bad thing, but delayed viewing, at least relative to a show’s standing on its network, doesn’t really change a whole lot. As you’ll see in the charts below, the conventional wisdom that high-rated shows stay high with DVR viewing, and low-rated shows stay low, is pretty much true.

TV by the Numbers looked at the adults 18-49 ratings for all broadcast scripted series from the 2015-16 season (excluding those that have already been canceled) and compared their same-day, Live +3 and Live +7 rankings. On all five networks, the No. 1 show in same-day is also No. 1 in Live +3 and Live +7. On four of the five, the lowest-rated show in same-day remains at the bottom even with delayed viewing.

Of the 90 shows measured, only 10 moved up or down more than three spots from same-day to Live +3. There’s even less change from Live +3 to Live +7 (no surprise, since a majority of DVR viewing happens in the first three days after air): Only one show moves more than two places.

“Empire” was once again the No. 1 show in the Live +3 adults 18-49 ratings for the week of April 17. The FOX hit had both the top demo rating (5.3) and the largest gain from same-day (1.5 points).

With both “The Big Bang Theory” and “NCIS” airing repeats, another CBS show, “Blue Bloods,” led the viewer tallies. Its Live +3 total is 13.99 million, and it added 3.59 million viewers to beat out “The Blacklist” for the top gain.

$

Per usual when they’re both airing new episodes, “Empire” and “The Big Bang Theory” gained the most from DVR viewing in the Live +7 ratings for April 4-10.

“Empire” led the 18-49 gains for the week, adding 2.0 points (4.3 to 6.3) and making up the majority of its same-day decline vs. the previous week. Though it was down half a point (vs. 4.8) in the same-day ratings, it was only 0.2 behind its March 30 episode in Live +7 (6.3 vs. 6.5).

“The Big Bang Theory” added the most viewers (5.28 million) for the week. “The Originals” (0.3 to 0.7, +133 percent) and “Quantico” (3.57 million to 6.82 million viewers, +91 percent) were the percentage-gain leaders.

The Top 25 gainers (including ties) in the Live +7 ratings for April 4-10, 2016 are below. The rankings include first-run, regular series only, not repeats.

Rating
: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns.
Share (of Audience):
The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time.
Time Shifted Viewing:
Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include  viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

Three shows had changes to their 18-49 ratings from Wednesday’s fast nationals. “Empire” (3.8) and “The Middle” (1.7) each adjusted up a tenth of a point, while “Nashville” (0.8) adjusted down.

Also of note: “Arrow” and “Supernatural” held at their early numbers as they ended up not being pre-empted in Chicago; the scheduled baseball game on The CW affiliate there was rained out.

Upward adjustments in adults 18-49 are in bold; downward adjustments are in bold italics.

The hidden DVR bump: Live viewing brings less than half of top shows’ ratings

$
0
0

That episode of “Grey’s Anatomy” you watched a couple weeks ago? Or “Empire”? Or the finale of “The Walking Dead”? Chances are you didn’t watch it live.

With the growth of DVR use and the proliferation of streaming sites, it’s common knowledge that a lot of TV viewing — a majority of it, for some shows — doesn’t happen the night a show initially airs. But live + same-day ratings that are released each morning mask the fact that the number of people who sit down and watch a show in real time, without any kind of shift, is even smaller than that.

In the four weeks ending April 10, the Top 25 shows on broadcast and cable (excluding sports telecasts) gathered two-thirds (66 percent) of their seven-day 18-49 ratings and 76 percent of their seven-day total audience the day a show airs (anyone who watches a show by 3 a.m. the following morning is part of the same-day audience).

The number of people who actually sit down to watch when a show starts, however, is considerably lower. Less than half (48 percent) of the Top 25 shows’ 18-49 ratings in those four weeks came from live viewing*, and only four shows in the Top 25 in the time frame — the ACM Awards and three episodes of “Little Big Shots” — earned as much as 67 percent of their rating from live viewing.

(*Per Nielsen, “live” means viewing in real time only. If you start an episode of, say, “Empire” at 9:15 p.m. on Wednesday, you’re counted as part of the live + same-day audience.)

Even the season finale of “The Walking Dead,” which you might think fans would want to see unfold in real time, had only 43 percent of its seven-day audience tuning in at 9 p.m. ET on April 3. That was, however, a slightly larger share of the final rating than in the previous two weeks, in which the live audience made up only 37.5 percent of the seven-day total.

In a number of cases, in fact, the biggest DVR gain is not from same-day to Live +3 or Live +3 to Live +7, but from live to live + same-day. The “Walking Dead” finale, for instance, grew 68 percent from live to live + same-day (4.1 to 6.9) and just 32 percent from same-day to Live +3 (6.9 to 9.1).

Similarly, “Empire” on April 6 and “The Big Bang Theory” on April 7 grew more from live to same-day (43 percent and 72 percent, respectively) than from same-day to Live +3 (33 percent and 48 percent).

Below is a breakdown of the viewing patterns for the Top 10 shows in adults 18-49 (including ties) in the four weeks from March 14-April 10.

Definitions:

Definitions:

Definitions:
