Broadcast primetime live + same-day ratings for Wednesday, Oct. 5, 2016

Note: Some stations in the Southeastern U.S. pre-empted their prime-time schedules for coverage of Hurricane Matthew.

The numbers for Wednesday are down almost across the board, which is not good news for a pair of premieres on The CW:

Wednesday was a down night for nearly every show on the broadcast networks, with nothing improving on last week and only a few series even holding steady.

The night’s two premieres also struggled a bit. The CW’s “Arrow” debuted to a 0.7 rating in adults 18-49, pending updates, down four tenths of a point in adults 18-49 vs. last season and off about two tenths from its 2015-16 average. New drama “Frequency” managed only a 0.4.

ABC and NBC were the steadiest networks on the night. At ABC, “Speechless” (1.8) and “Black-ish” (1.6) held steady with last week, while “The Goldbergs” (1.8) and “Modern Family” (2.2) each fell 0.1 and “Designated Survivor” (1.6) came down 0.2.

NBC’s “Blindspot” was even with last week’s 1.3. “Law & Order: SVU” (1.3, -0.2 vs. last week’s fast nationals) and “Chicago PD” (1.3, -0.2) were each down a little.

FOX’s “Lethal Weapon” posted a 1.7, down from 1.9 in last week’s fast nationals (it adjusted up to 2.0 in the finals), while “Empire” was off three tenths at 3.3. CBS’ “Survivor” (1.8, -0.3), “Criminal Minds” (series low 1.4, -0.4) and “Code Black” (1.0, -0.2) all fell as well.

‘Designated Survivor’ posts more big DVR gains: Broadcast Live +7 ratings for Sept. 26-Oct. 2

$

“Designated Survivor” is emerging as a delayed-viewing beast in the early part of the 2016-17 season.

The ABC show has been putting up solid ratings for its initial airing, but for each of the first two weeks it’s been on, almost as many people have watched it after the fact. The Sept. 28 episode had the biggest seven-day bump from DVR and on-demand viewing in both adults 18-49 (2.1 points, 1.8 to 3.9) and total viewers (7.65 million) of any show on the broadcast networks. Its 18-49 more than doubled, and the viewer total came within 20,000 people of doing so as well.

“The Big Bang Theory” (+2.0), “This Is Us” (+1.9) and “Empire” (+1.9) had the next-largest gains in adults 18-49 for the week of Sept. 26-Oct. 2. All three were also in the Top 6 in viewers added, along with “Bull” and “The Blacklist.”

Here are the Live +7 rankings for Sept. 26-Oct. 2, 2016. The rankings include first-run series and specials only, not repeats.

‘Big Bang Theory’ breaks ‘Empire’ streak, CBS wins week 3: Broadcast Top 25 and network rankings

“Empire’s” streak as the top-rated scripted series on network TV came to an end — barely — in the week of Oct. 3-9.

“The Big Bang Theory” scored a 3.5 rating among adults 18-49 with its Oct. 3 episode, narrowly beating “Empire’s” 3.4. The last time another scripted broadcast show beat “Empire” was the week of Jan. 26, 2015 — when “Empire” was just four weeks old.

CBS scored a narrow win in adults 18-49 for the week over NBC and had a healthy lead in viewers. Here are the network standings for week 3 and the season to date:

Oct. 3-9 ABC CBS CW FOX NBC
Adults 18-49 rating/share (rank) 1.4/5 (3) 2.1/8 (1) 0.4/2 (5) 1.1/4 (4) 2.0/7 (2)
Viewers (millions) (rank) 6.10 (3) 9.58 (1) 1.32 (5) 3.44 (4) 7.30 (2)

Season to date ABC CBS CW FOX NBC
Adults 18-49 rating/share (rank) 1.7/6 (3) 2.2/8 (2) 0.3/1 (5) 1.5/5 (4) 2.5/9 (1)
Viewers (millions) (rank) 6.82 (3) 10.53 (1) 1.06 (5) 4.50 (4) 8.76 (2)

Current week ratings are live + same-day. Season-to-date ratings are “most current,” a combination of Live +7 and same-day ratings.

Among Spanish-language broadcasters, Telemundo (0.7/3 in adults 18-49) narrowly beat Univision (0.6/2). The two were virtually tied in viewers.

Presidential debate, football and baseball are cable’s best in combined Top 25 for Oct. 3-9

The second presidential debate on Oct. 9 drove big audiences to the cable news channels, which show up in several spots in the combined Top 25 for the week.

“Monday Night Football” on ESPN was the top cable show for Oct. 3-9, and it sits second in the combined rankings in adults 18-49 with a 4.7 rating and fourth in total viewers. CNN’s coverage of the debate* is fourth in 18-49 (4.0) and eighth in viewers; both its and Fox News’ debate coverage post-debate analysis also moved into the Top 25.

(*The broadcast networks’ debate coverage isn’t ranked because it aired commercial-free. ABC and CBS all would have ranked in the Top 25 had it been included.)

ESPN’s coverage of the National League wild-card game between the Mets and Giants also made the combined Top 25 in adults 18-49, though it fell short in viewers.

Rating
: Estimated percentage of the universe of TV households (or other specified group) tuned to a program in the average minute. Ratings are expressed as a percent.
Fast Affiliate Ratings: These first national ratings are available at approximately 11 a.m. ET the day after telecast. The figures may include stations that did not air the entire network feed, as well as local news breaks or cutaways for local coverage or other programming. Fast Affiliate ratings are not as useful for live programs and are likely to differ significantly from the final results, because the data reflect normal broadcast feed patterns.
Share (of Audience):
The percent of households (or persons) using television who are tuned to a specific program, station or network in a specific area at a specific time.
Time Shifted Viewing:
Program ratings for national sources are produced in three streams of data – Live, Live +Same-Day and Live +7 Day. Time-shifted figures account for incremental viewing that takes place with DVRs. Live+SD includes viewing during the same broadcast day as the original telecast, with a cut-off of 3 a.m. local time when meters transmit daily viewing to Nielsen for processing. Live +7 ratings include  viewing that takes place during the 7 days following a telecast.

‘Sunday Night Football’ suffers, but NBC still tops week 4: Broadcast Top 25 and network rankings

NFL ratings are down pretty much across the board this season, and it has hit “Sunday Night Football” pretty hard the past couple weeks as well.

NBC’s broadcast ceded the No. 1 spot in both adults 18-49 (to FOX’s NFL post-game show “The OT”) and in total viewers — where it finished in fifth place — for the week of Oct. 10-16. Sunday’s game was a five-year low for the franchise.

Despite that, NBC reclaimed the adults 18-49 crown for the week with help from “This Is Us” and “The Voice,” while CBS was once again tops in total viewers. Here are the network standings for week 3 and the season to date:

Oct. 10-16 ABC CBS CW FOX NBC
Adults 18-49 rating/share (rank) 1.4/5 (4) 1.7/6 (2t) 0.6/2 (5) 1.7/6 (2t) 1.9/7 (1)
Viewers (millions) (rank) 5.83 (3) 9.11 (1) 1.60 (5) 5.11 (4) 7.18 (2)

Season to date ABC CBS CW FOX NBC
Adults 18-49 rating/share (rank) 1.8/6 (3) 2.2/8 (2) 0.4/1 (5) 1.7/6 (4) 2.5/9 (1)
Viewers (millions) (rank) 7.03 (3) 10.71 (1) 1.25 (5) 4.98 (4) 8.77 (2)

Current week ratings are live + same-day. Season-to-date ratings are “most current,” a combination of Live +7 and same-day ratings.

Note: Complete ratings for Univision and Telemundo weren’t available at posting time. We’ll update the post when they are.

Rich get richer as ‘Empire,’‘Big Bang,’‘Designated Survivor’ lead broadcast Live +7 ratings for Oct. 3-9

$

It’s well-established that DVR and on-demand viewing tends to give the biggest boosts to shows that are already pretty popular. The Live +7 ratings for Oct. 3-9 are a prime example.

Four of the five top-rated scripted shows among adults 18-49 in the same-day ratings are also in the Top 5 for DVR gains. “The Big Bang Theory” and “Empire” tie for first with “Designated Survivor,” while “Modern Family” is fourth and “Grey’s Anatomy” ties for fifth.

“Designated Survivor,” meanwhile, continues to be a DVR powerhouse and the runaway leader in that metric among new shows. The Oct. 5 episode more than doubled both its 18-49 rating (1.6 to 3.5) and its total audience (7 million to 14.33 million).

The premieres of “Timeless” and “Conviction” both had pretty good gains as well. “Timeless” went from 1.8 to 3.0 in adults 18-49 after a week of delayed viewing and added 4.44 million viewers, while “Conviction” grew by 0.7 in the 18-49 demo (0.9 to 1.6) and 3 million viewers.

Here are the Live +7 rankings for Oct. 3-9, 2016. The rankings include first-run series and specials only, not repeats.

“The Big Bang Theory” had the biggest gain from three days of DVR and on-demand viewing last week, moving past two NFL games to the No. 1 spot among adults 18-49.

The CBS comedy has a 5.0 rating in the 18-49 demographic in the Live +3 ratings for Oct. 10-16, up from a 3.4 in the same-day ratings. It moved ahead of both “Sunday Night Football” (4.9) and “Thursday Night Football” (4.7) to take the top spot. “Empire,” which currently sits fourth at 4.6, will likely move past one or both of the NFL games when the Live +7 ratings are tallied.

Also of note: The 600th episode of “The Simpsons” makes the Top 10 with a 3.4 in adults 18-49, and the premieres of “Chicago Fire” (2.5), “American Housewife” (2.5) and “The Middle” (2.2) all join the Top 25.

“Designated Survivor” added the most viewers after three days, growing by 5.17 million people.

“The Big Bang Theory” and “Designated Survivor” remain at the top of the DVR/on-demand viewing rankings for week 4 of the season, and they’re joined by a second rookie series, “This Is Us.”

The three shows were the biggest gainers in both adults 18-49 and viewers for the week of Oct. 10-16. “Big Bang” led the adults 18-49 rankings, adding 2.0 points (3.4 to 5.4) after a week of delayed viewing. “Designated Survivor” and “This Is Us” tied for second with 1.9-point gains.

“Designated Survivor” also led the percentage gains in total viewers and was one of seven shows that at least doubled its 18-49 rating. “Quantico” had the biggest percentage jump in adults 18-49, growing by 125 percent (0.8 to 1.8).

‘Star’ gets an early premiere with fall finale of ‘Empire’

FOX will unveil its new drama “Star” a little earlier than planned.

The network announced Wednesday that it’s moving up the premiere of the new show from “Empire” co-creator Lee Daniels to December and pair it with the fall finale of “Empire.”

On Dec. 14, “Empire” will air at 8 p.m. ET/PT, an hour earlier than its usual time, leading into the debut of “Star” at 9. The new show will take over the 9 p.m. spot for the winter starting Jan. 4, while “Empire” resumes in the spring.

“Star” comes from Daniels and co-creator Tom Donaghy (“The Mentalist”) and centers on three young women (Jude Demorest, Ryan Destiny and Brittany O’Grady) trying to make it in the music business. Queen Latifah, Benjamin Bratt and Amiyah Scott also star; guest stars for Season 1 include Lenny Kravitz, Tyrese Gibson and Naomi Campbell.

“Star” will pair with “Lethal Weapon” on Wednesday nights in the winter. “Empire” is set to return in the spring, where it will air following FOX’s limited series “Shots Fired.”

Here’s a new teaser for “Star”:

Elsewhere, however, numbers were fairly steady or slightly improved. “Survivor” (1.9) bounced back 0.3 from its World Series-induced low last week, and “Code Black” rose by two tenths of a point — although it was still below the 1.0 mark at 0.9. “The Goldbergs” (2.0) improved by two tenths on ABC, and the other comedies were fairly steady. “Lethal Weapon” rose a tenth vs. its last episode to 1.8. “Arrow” and “Frequency” were in line with their averages for The CW.

“Sunday Night Football” hit its best ratings since the beginning of the season, and election night brought in sizable audiences for ABC, CBS and NBC for the week of Nov. 7-13. That in turn pushed some entertainment programming out of the Top 25.

“SNF” scored a 7.7 rating in adults 18-49 and 22.51 million viewers, the biggest audience for a primetime NFL game since Sept. 18. The game led both the 18-49 and viewer rankings by a sizable margin.

NBC fared the best with its election coverage, finishing third overall in adults 18-49 with a 4.0 and seventh in viewers with 11.21 million. The top entertainment show of the week was “The Big Bang Theory” on CBS (3.4, 14.47 million).

“Empire” rebounded some from its series low ratings last week and led FOX to the No. 1 ranking among adults 18-49. The show improved by 0.2 week to week and got back above the 3.0 mark with a 3.1 rating in the demographic. “Lethal Weapon” was off slightly at 1.7 vs. last week’s 1.8.

Just about everything else was within its normal range as well, with small movements up or down compared to last week. “Criminal Minds” (1.4) and “Blindspot” (1.1) each rose a tenth of a point, while “Survivor” (1.9), “Modern Family” (2.2) and “Speechless” (1.6) all fell by a tenth. “The Goldbergs” dipped 0.2 to a 1.8.

The first of two “Chicago PD” episodes was low for NBC at 1.1, but the second, airing in its regular timeslot, was even with last week’s 1.3. “Black-ish” (1.6) is even with last week’s fast nationals and 0.1 ahead of its final number. “Designated Survivor” (1.2), “Code Black” (0.9), “Arrow” (0.7) and “Frequency” (0.3) all matched their numbers from last week.
